racing a painting

By asia eng | June 17, 2009

i have a solo show coming up at pueblo nuevo in berekeley, ca.  i just got it confirmed today…. sooo lets see how baller i can be and see if i can throw it together and not have it suck!

it dawned on me a day or two ago that i should panic. so ive been knocking things down… made backgrounds for a ton of liddle paintings and im gonna work on some drawings, etc. but while i was talking to plinio, the gallery curator, i decided to race a painting - i wanted to see if i could complete a 3ft painting in a day …. came out a draw. but considering i started at 11am and i stopped at 130am its not bad haha

mmmmm ok photobucket is giving me the middle finger so ill throw the photo up when its not being a stick up my ass.

on another note, i want to thank everyone who wished me happy birthday, especially the alivenotdead.com community - you guys are amazing and im so glad i can be apart of a network with such amazing and inspiring people, so thank you for making my life better <3

“theres a storm in my heart”

By asia eng | April 27, 2009

friday, may 1st, 2009:

“the kids are alright tour” (2nd stop)

[ SUBTEXT GALLERY ]

2479 kettner blvd. san diego ca 92101

opening, 7 - 10pm

“there’s a storm (weathering) in my heart”…..(acrylic on canvas) 3′ x 4′.

its amazing how much i can write about the same goddamn thing, and i can paint about the same old shit, but it comes out in different ways. like a kalidescope, but not…

[ there’s a storm in my heart. ]

theres a storm in my heart.
as soon as the momentum in my steps slowed down
i realized i could feel the rain.

because if i fell with the water in the sky
i want the next person to catch me.

in the beginning… i did this while i had the flu. obviously ended up painting over it.. well, the under painting was pretty ha

i was like, huh, i can paint. how funny.

this is a self portrait. i have a friend who kinda led me on and then dropped me hella quick. it sucked, but i recovered. i also learned after he hurt me, i was strong enough to get up and try again… i think that was an important lesson for me this year. i think i also learned that since i was ready to hurt, i was ready to give an actual relationship a try, even if it were to be a ‘part time’ one.

so this friend and i went out to eat at midnight. we found ourselves drinking tea at dennys at 3am. he called me out — he said i act all tough on the outside, but really im a little deer in the inside, like a fawn. i was like, gah… hes kinda right. whadda dick .

im still upset at the last one because he took too much away from me.

online somewhere is said my power animal was a king cobra. i kinda laughed to myself because i paint a lot of snakes in my paintings. theyre fallacies to be honest, representing mostly the people or guys who hurt me. so i find it funny that the things that hurt me are (supposedly) essentially me. though i would like to point out that as much as i am a romantic, i dont prefer to romanticize misery — that would be counter intuitive mentality for me… more or less im just pissed off……and i guess very snakey.. haha.

the butterflies are my signature, theyre pretty much in every single painting i do, whether visible or hidden. my first 2 person show i shared with mia araujo i had them, they represented the beauty found in pain. its a little emo, but essentially theyre little metaphors about evolving no matter the price.

an excerpt from [ like water. ]

“vodka will not wash away the sins, but it will sting a little.
nor will the tears cleanse away the residue of so much in so little time.
i probably cried the hardest when i gave away what meant the most, what i was saving.
they dont even remember. and that was a while back anyways.
their hands were shakey in mine, and i knew i couldnt hold onto them any longer.

its like band aids for scratches, its really just for show. it doesnt make us heal faster,
but we like to believe it does just because it is sticky and it hugs back.”

my 36hr journey .

By asia eng | April 27, 2009

work it out, non stop!!

FRIDAY: i worked as johnny walker product knowledge at diamond kareoke in hacienda heights… it was weird because it was on a pleasure block - i worked at the door of a hostess bar, next to a naughty store and a deja vu. i was like, what am i doing here… i have to teach four year olds in ten hours! it was chill, because people who go in hostess bars are reluctant to take free drinks at the door, its weird but its just the demographic. i got off about 2am, poked my head next door at the strip club before going home… i slept for five hours and got ready for teaching.

SATURDAY: 945am im in northridge and i steach general kids art until 12… 15 kids on a sugar high who have the attention span of fruit flies… oh my god it was so crazy! but theyre awesome as usual! my boss form the night before called me, but then messaged me right after admitting that he was stilll drunk from the bar and wanted to know what he said to me. i lied and said that he thinks im spicy and he wants to have my baby, hahaha.

1230pm - 230 is advanced art/ portfolio prep art. some of my students have made some awesome things…even though the medium of the day was watercolor and, well, watercolor likes to give me the middle finger… i did what i can haha

430 - 730pm i taught my other class in koreatown… i forced my students to fill out the paperwork i made for them to think critically about their portfolio and weighing college decisions.

930 - 1230pm it took me an hour to get back to pasadena to change and fly straight to long beach to work at v20… i was working the door, which by the way it was freezing out in long beach! v20 wasnt bad i had a good time! beatfreaks performed (and they rocked the house!) and there was a shirt giveaway “my ninja” which was pretty cool.. i was stoked to get a free shirt but i think someone stole it, boo! so small world…. while i was at V20, i bumped into gracie “peachies” su, who is an artist on alivenotdead.com, and who i have met a few months ago at the la mixer. peachies is the girlfriend of daniel, whos company, ‘future rockstars of ameria (fr*a)’ was promoting the shirts at the club. grace’s boyfriends partner, another daniel, is the guy who hired me for my teaching job in la crescenta and ktown. which is why i say, la is friggin small!

9am - 3pm another 5 hrs of sleep and im upandattem painting until 3. it takes an hour and a half for me to reach san diego. i dropped my piece off at subtext gallery, and then have dinner with my wife #2, rica. i then went to robertos for carne asada fries and california burritos, and they totally dicked me because they charged me for avocado but didnt give it to me! i was pissed!!! i cant drive another hr and a half back to complain! oh well. haha

1030pm i came back from SD and the boys swung by bout 11pm to pick up their orders of goodness.i dont even know why im still up. but it was an amazing weekend full of work, play, people, and a crapload of gas haha. ill throw up the pics laterrrr

a journey of the past 48 hrs, documented by fotos .

By asia eng | April 14, 2009

my friday/saturday adventures, documented by photos .

my adventures begin on sawtell .. i was having lunch with my older sister who stopped by los angeles for the weekend… side note: dont you think its sketchy to have a bathroom with a broken sink? i hope those fools who handled our food washed their hands in the kitchen, otherwise, thats just wrong………..

my sister and i stopped by giant robot, and they were selling copies of jackie chan’s ‘police story’…. i was pretty amused to see our dear friend, terence…

oh yea baby. hah.

my sis and i went to bergamont, santa monica and looked at a ton of gallery spaces… mostly contemporary art… interesting……….

these little figurines were actually really really small…. pretty chill .

thats my sister, tiffany, peering through the display

tiffany playing around with the giant funky sculptures

funky drawings

the next couple pictures are my kids in northridge …………

little tots!

ejah kang studios — ejah just came back from new mexico from another show, poor thing said it was really cold! awww….

later that evening i stopped by lebasse gallery in culver city–

first off, if you havent seen the space yet, its beautiful, you should really check it out!

second of all, you should really check out this show!

tessar lo never disappoints me, and his solo show is beeaaauuutttiiifffuuulll!

my favorite picture, of the people enjoying his work:

awww yea.

if you want to check out more of his show, go to:

http://dailydujour.com/2009/04/11/seen-tessar-lo-future-perfect/

all you art-heads out there need to peep dailydujour.com! this site covers eevveerrryyttthiinngg! based in los angeles, hehe!

there are a lot of things that i enjoy about tessar and his body of work, hes very inspiring, as a person and as an artist. his work reminds me that i have a lot of catching up to do, and when i felt lost with my art, he gave me some words of encouragement that i reflect on almost everyday. i am very thankful for him. i wish tessar the best of luck on his return to canada, and will hopefully see him again in the near future <3

cheers!

so what’d you do today?

By asia eng | April 10, 2009

i got up at 730am… which is early for me considering i went to bed about 3am… just up and at’em…

i went from, organizing my songs to the cds in my car, to drawing over the cds with a sharpie, to putting a stencil on my cd case, and then to putting the stencil on a dress i bought over the winter but have never worn it…… it was a weird scenario of steps, but while this, i was also online, making lunch, talking to people, and sketching. weee!

so these are my art projects:

my cd case with a hot pink stencil…. the type was leftover from my freshman year in college… haha

the process of me putting the stencil on my beater dress.. ahh…! i love being an artist!

front view of the dress in my hallway; my hallway is lined with a good body of gallery work from the past yrs.

wee! excitement! and if i ever get bored with it, i can re-stencil! this is pretty addicting, i want to put more graphics onto things… mmmm delicious!

i had to stop about 2pm because i had to fly over to northridge and teach… afterwards, i went to arcadia to tokyo table to drop off something, have dinner, drink with a friend… and as i was trying to leave a couple more friends stopped by so i felt compelled to stay… and i finally finally got home and decided to be a nerd and blog my art projects. now i have to finish up some things…..

so what’d you do today?

thai town festival!!

By asia eng | April 6, 2009

[ MY WORK, MY LIFE. ]

i dont need to reiterate my other jobs, so i will talk about the more recent events…

[ teaching. ]

oh man, these days ive just been getting mad ego boosters…! haha

i have a new student at visual 21 at the koreatown campus.. a few weeks ago she tested out my class to see if she liked it — the next class she was on my role sheet and her mother asked me in person last class if i worked more days in ktown, because her daughter has spring break and she wanted to spend more time with me.. hella love! didnt realize my student was enjoying her time with me… so that was hella cool!

[ promo work. ]

and yestarday at thai town i worked most of the festival… i worked at the walong booth, where i sold mostly coconut juice. it was soo much fun! but after 6 hrs in stilettos my feet crapped out and i had to run around in flip flops… it was really great! its kinda weird being the eye candy for grocery products sold at a 99 ranch store, but it was still awesome! the people at my booth were so impressed, initially they told me they would rehire me — then there was talk about traveling and having me come with … new york chicago, hawaii, etc. the next one is in san diego, and im thinking about it — its on 4/20, and im a good girl and i would oppose making money haha!

i think the story of the day for me was, the first person to hit on me was, a woman. black…. and her daughter’s name is aisha (asia)… hahaha she had a little boy ask for my number, and it was so funny i couldnt turn it down… but she immediately wrote it on her after i gave it to the boy… hahahaha!

my adventure via los fotos :

beauty .

the women staring at the boys praying

it was a beautiful day, around low 80s, very sunny….

more or less, my chill spot and tony who hired me…. it was really funny, after i wore flip flops he learned he was taller than me… people say im less intimidating when im not wearing heels…

ladies of walong

my other teammate hahaha

the guy in charge of marketing for walong products

some said i looked like the girl on the rice poster…. i dont in this picture, but its still funny

this is me and paul, i just met paul maybe last friday — my friend who got me into this event works with paul at her 9-5 and she asked if i wanted to go to her mom’s resturant for teppanyaki — it was pauls birthday and my mission was to get him as drunk as possible haha! he was at the festival helping some friends at another booth, but occassonally he stopped by! mucho fun………

my life makes me feel like im falling in love over and over again.. <3

i just wish some other people were as, responsive, hahaha

[ MY SUCCESSFUL FRIENDS. ]

…and at the end, a picture of me about to get knocked out by my grandma…

By asia eng | April 3, 2009

….as for the updates on my jobs:

i feel like im dancing for quarters… i wish i was getting paid what i was worth, but im doing the best i can. i havent turned down the tiniest job yet, and i feel exhausted! but do what i can, have fun, learn, grow, excell….yea? yea… hehe!

[ TEACHING. ]

… still awesome, still in honeymoon stage, still so in love. *sigh* perhaps its a very ‘bay area’ thing, because i feel guilty pursuing myself rather than giving back to my community… teaching here in los angeles has given me the oppertunity to help other people and make some chump change. not saying im the best teacher out there… no way… but i have a lot of heart and a lot of pride with the people i come across and i do whatever i can to help, and i think that’s what its all about, right?

_thoughts on northern vs southern california:

people usually ask me if i like southern california or northern california better. its pretty funny how quick people are quick to get in your face if they suspect you’re about to crap on la. i like to think of my opinion of the bay versus la as pragmatic — from what i gathered, the yay is big on heritage, giving back, culture, etc. it also has a flavor, and people dont give an eff if you dig it or not.. whereas, los angeles is about sole survival, do what you have to do to get to the top, which is why i am here. i miss the bay and what its about, but i cant deny that i belong in southern california to take care of business. because i grew up in the bay area, i romanitcize the nostalgia of home, so i am partial to the bay area. i love los angeles for where i am in life. i work hard and i play hard, so i dont mind being cooped up in my studio for twelve, fourteen hour days and then being able to go out to hollywood whenever i please. im very happy with my life (im gonna see kaskade on saturday at vanguard, holla!!!)

[ GALLERY. ]

i will have a small avatar at the hive…. it was suppose to be a self portrait and i painted myself as a melty dragon animal thingy in a swamplands… very small painting…. nothing big. if you’re in the area, drop by!

[ PROMO. ]

this sunday, april 5th, i will be working at the thaitown festival or the only curry festival in southern california. i will have to represent as product knowledge for the company… man!! i gotta work 8am - 8pm! lame! but gotta make dat monayyyy… if you guys are bored or looking for something to do, stop by the festival and show some love! its free!
